Ascent Trip Report

Directions: From Salt Lake went up I-15 to Blackfoot then up to Arco and Mackay. Betweeen mile markers 129-130 took road to the trailhead and camped for the night.

Started up the trail at 6:30 am. Out of the shoots it gets the blood pumper and the trail has a way of climbing quickly. The trail is well cut all the way through the trees and along the first ridge until you get to the boulders / cliff areas. At this point there are several choices. All of which seemed to be at worst a class 3 scramble. The hike up took us 4 hours 45 minutes (some of our group were around 4 hours even), stayed on the summit for an hour, and then it was another 3 hours to make our way down. Roughly, I would give yourself 10 hours and hope to beat it (if you are in great shape you will smoke that time).

In preparation for this peak we read quite a few accounts about the peak. There were several accounts with varied reports - i.e. "this was the scariest and most life-threatening hike they had been on" TO "we didn't realize we had finished Chicken Out Ridge until we got near the summit". My take would be closer to the latter. This hike never felt overly dangerous (other than we had some guys off trail above us as we neared the summit that knocked some rocks loose).

This was a wonderful hike with beautiful views all the way up (hiking down is a different story - not as beautiful). The chicken out ridge lived up to its name though, there were several on the trail (my guess would be 50% almost) that turned around. Again, the group I was with felt that it was nothing that we would even consider turning around on, but added to the fun of the hike.

Overall, we loved this hike and were pleasanlty suprised at its beauty. Idaho's crowned jewel was wonderful!
