Ascent Trip ReportPart of a presi-traverse, starting at the web/jackson trail and heading north to the Howker Ridge trail. 21.7mi, 9841 vert.
It's a real steady ascent to Eisenhower, then gets real crazy after Washington. Adams is a raging butthead. In the past few years I've done the drop from Madison off of pretty much every trail around that hill, and if there's one thing I've learned, there is no good way. It took us roughly 15.5h to do the whole thing and finished the last 3 miles in the dark... thankfully it's still a few weeks before the moose rut. The only way we could have stayed shorter would be to take less time at Washington (get food there, don't carry it) or to be familiar with the map; I really pushed the limit with this one...
advise: boots for the boulders. If you're not familiar with the terrain, don't go. I think this my seventh or eighth trip to the presi range, and the only time it hasn't been windy, raining, snowing, or anything like that at any point in the day. It's a trip, and it's like any other mountains out here. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and accept whatever comes.
