Ascent Trip Report

Started in a light rain and white-out about 12 noon after getting sick on the windy road past Lake Berryessa. The trail goes up about 400' before intersecting the dirt road which takes one directly to Mt. St. Helena. We got into a good down-pour soon after getting on the road, which turned to small hail and then snow over about a half hour of climbing. The hail was up to an inch thick on the road, and the snow up to 3 inches. The snow stopped before we passed the turnoff to the South summit about 1:30, where we took the middle road of a three-road intersection about 2 pm. This led us to the high point of Napa County, unbeknownst to us due to the continued white-out, causing us to search the ridge to the southeast looking for the point we had just been on (we assumed it was Mt. St. Helena). But on returning to the three-road intersection, we continued the way we hadn't tried to find it led over to the actual summit of Mt. St. Helena, which I then recognized from 5 years before. Happily, but unable to rest and eat lunch because of the snow on the ground, we returned the way we came, and surprizingly, the clouds lifted, letting us see the snow-covered country-side and patches of blue sky before we reached the turnoff to the South summit. We climbed the South summit where we found a large sight-seeing/picnic area but without anyone there but us. It was a long trip down as the sun set and even the upper clouds blew away leaving only a few on the nearby summits. We reached the car just as it became too dark to see the path about 6 pm.
