Ascent Trip ReportI've been making plans to start doing the US highpoints. As luck would have it, my family vacationed in Destin, FL, just over an hour from Britton Hill, so it became the first one to get crossed off the list!
I'd planned to drive up by myself after breakfast, but my kids wanted to join, so the whole family loaded into the car. We arrived at Lakewood Park just before noon, as a maintenance crew was loading up and leaving. The park is small, but really nicely maintained. I'd have liked to walk a couple of the trails behind the highpoint monument, but the kids were already feeling deflated that Britton Hill was not quite as impressive as they'd hoped, and I didn't want to try and talk them into joining me for anything else.
Despite the children's disappointment, it was a nice little trip, and an interesting experience to go from sea level to the highest point in a state and back again, all in the space of a few hours.
