Ascent Trip Report

On NE-29, 18.3 miles N of the Scotts Bluff - Sioux county line, which is in turn 4 miles N of Mitchell and US-26, on the E side of the hwy, is a gravel pullout where I parked. There was a wire fence but no adverse signage.

The hike is a straightforward mile E, with no cows grazing or any other current agricultural use. About half way, I negotiated the fence from section 18 to 17. About three fourths of the way, the terrain, which had been flat and easy open grassland up to this point, became a convoluted maze of furrowed sand dunes. After a final quarter mile of up-down-and-around the dunes, I arrived at the highest ground, which is near the S end of a N-S trending ridge.

While in the area, I also investigated Sioux Butte, which is two miles S of Johnson Butte on the W side of the highway, directly behind the 2X Johnson Ranch. I inquired at this ranch for permission, but the person who was present wasn't the owner; he was just a hired hand, the owner was away but would be back the next morning. I couldn't stay around until then, so I passed.
