Ascent Trip Report

I plugged Gates Canyon Road, Vacaville, into my auto's GPS, which got me to where we could follow the directions in Ben Stein's COHP(January 14, 2007) description, taking Gates Canyon Road up to where the pavement ends on the ridge. I then turned right (north) onto a good dirt road (this is probably Blue Ridge Road), taking it about 0.8 mi to park at the first access to the geodesic dome towers, checking them out, then walking the remaining 0.5 mi toward a rectanguloid tower marked with a "20." I found a USGS marker with "Vaca" on some concrete squares next to a concrete telephone box. It's about a 100 yard walk to the USGS marker from the locked gate off Blue Ridge Road, and an even shorter walk to the pile of rocks on the west side that appears to be the highest natural point left on the summit. I checked them for a register but couldn't find one. Gates Canyon Road is a very steep 1-lane drive much of the way, and I was glad to have only two vehicles pass us by where it widened a bit, since there weren't a lot of places to pass like that. Bikees seem to use it more than cars. Blue Ridge Road is fairly well-graded; we passed three vehicles on it, one a Fed-Ex truck heading north past Vaca, probably making a delivery to some remote ranch. I didn't see the new "no trespassing" signs Ben Stein saw a couple years ago.
