Ascent Trip ReportTook the Valley Way trail, avoided rain for most of the hike but the last mile up to the Madison hut rain began to fall and the temp dropped about 10 degrees. When we got to the hut, we welcomed the opportunity to sit and warm up, some of us were definitely exhibiting early stages of hypothermia. My dad and sister decided to continue to warm up and rest a bit more while Sean, Neil and myself set out for Adams. We took the Airline trail up to the summit and it was as if we were hiking in a cloud. We could see about 15 feet in front of us but that was it. Quite disappointing considering the potential views to be had. We spent very short time on the summit and then made our way back to the hut, taking our time as the rocks were very slippery while descending. Once at the hut, we rounded up my dad and sister and made our way to Madison summit. Similar story with lack of visibility. Luckily though the rain from earlier had ceased but clouds stubbornly remained. Again, since we had no view at all, we descended and made our way back down to the hut and then to the base of the Appalachia. We were rewarded, however with a hot meal and a delicious beer at the Woodstock Inn which is always a great way to wrap up a successful hiking day.
