Ascent Trip Report

Nice little hike. Parked at the Picnic area off of Mt Davis Rd. Started on the High Point, then immediately turned left onto the Tub Mill Run Trail. Trail descends rapidly until hitting Shelter Rock Road. Decided to hike down the 'road', really more of a wide grassy path.
Followed that about 2/3 of a mile down until it picked up the Shelter Rock Trail. This was fun. Starts ascending back up the ridge, crossing Tub Mill Run when its still a tiny creek. Make sure you stop at the Shelter Rock for which the trail is named. It's not marked or anything but should be easily visible even in summer off the left side of the trail. Some really cool rock formations.
Shelter Rock Trail then turns North and levels out, following the ridge line. Gradual rise until reaching the actual High Point. The point itself is rather uninteresting, just a large boulder, otherwise unspectacular. Some plaques to the side give interesting historical and geological facts about the area.
The view from the top of the observation tower is nice, but not as good as you might expect. The hills to the north and southwest look slightly higher. A plaque at the top points out how this is an optical illusion, but even just having ones look higher can kinda kill the excitement of being at the highpoint.
Still a thousand times cooler than Delaware, but a bit of a letdown after New Jersey.
