Ascent Trip Report

Note: stats include Torreys which was summitted first

I hiked this pair the day after my Blanca Peak ascent. In my standard 2wd rental car we drove the rough dirt road as far as N39.67434 W105.80256 (3243m) where several other cars were parked. Beyond, the road is badly rutted for about 20m and barely passable except for the very brave and those with high clearance. Beyond, the road is in reasonable condition all the way to the (upper) trailhead (N39.66133 W105.78473).

We arrived from Denver a little late and had to be back by 4pm: leaving our "trailhead" at 09:20 it isn't clear whether we have time to get the summit. Melanie and Eirik are less summit orientated than I and suggest I go ahead. I make good progress and by the time I reach the point where the Torrey's path takes off (N39.63786 W105.81323), it's apparent that I have time to get both summits. I leave my pack at the intersection and head up to Torrey's (4349m, cairn, N39.64277 W105.82123) then recross the saddle to Gray's (4353m, cairn, N39.63381 W105.81757; also a slightly lower cairn 100m SE along the ridge at N39.63360 W105.81710). A bit later, Melanie and Eirik arrive and we descend Gray's together, getting down in time to make the planned rendezvous with Petter Bjorstad ready for our planned Gannett Peak ascent a few days later.

Timings: depart 0920, upper trailhead 0945, Torrey's 1115-1120, Gray's 1146-1240, trailhead 1414.
