Ascent Trip Report

I accessed Hawks Mountain from Fields, OR. I drove north 1.1 miles to Catlaw Valley Road and took it 12.4 miles to an unsigned gravel road on my left. Zero your odometer and go straight for 0.5 miles then turn left, at mile 6.9 go through an open gate that was signed to "Keep Gate Closed", at mile 18.5 cross a cattle guard, at mile 23.3 turn left on Ackley Camp Road, and at mile 25.8 park along the road. My topo shows a road going towards Hawks Mountain up to Ham Waterhole, but this road does not exist. I hiked through the sage brush and up the steep slope to the summit. There is a barb wire fence to cross about half way up. Great views.

There are old jeep roads that approach the summit from the east and west and would make the hike shorter, but figuring out where they originate is challenging. Ackley Camp Road can also be accessed from Hwy 140 at the OR/NV border and driving in past Acty Mountain.
