Ascent Trip ReportDrive on Interstate 8 about 50 miles east of San Diego to the Buckman Springs Road exit. This is the exit with the roadside rest stop 3.8 miles past the Sunrise Highway exit. At the exit go south and reset your odometer where the road crosses old highway 80. Go 0.9 miles on Buckman Springs Road and pull off on the right at a gate for unsigned Bear Valley Road, 16S12. The gate is unlocked most of the year. Open the gate and drive on the good dirt road which will head west up a grade and in 0.8 miles pass through an old gate. At the top of the grade go straight at 1.7 miles at a junction with Long Valley Road on the left. At 2.1 miles pass a helicopter pad on your right. Then at 2.3 miles pull off the road next to a fence on your left where the road makes a bend to the north. UTM for this point is: 546000E, 3625330N. Buckman BM is on top of the hill to the southwest. Hike around the fence and on a cleared path toward the hill which must have a million shell casings and lots of broken glass from past target shooting. After the path runs out in about 100 yards make your way through the chaparral up the slope. Fortunately, the brush is below knee height further up the slope and easier going. One can reach the top in about 1/2 hour after a hike of about 0.6 miles with an elevation gain of 450 ft. 7/95 RLC
