Ascent Trip ReportAnother wonderful, long day of rambling in the mountains with The Usual Suspects (Dave, Mark, Sue, Patti, Sean, Walter, Linda, RFG1, & RFG2).
We parked at the TH for the Easton Ridge/Kachess Ridge Trail and started hiking at 7:30am with suspect weather in the offing. First stop was Para Point, then onto Mount Baldy, then back to Para Point and then onto Thomas Mountain. Lots of snow but good for kicking steps and plunge-stepping. After lunch at Thomas Mountain with beautiful views of Cle Elum Lake and surrounding peaks, we decided to go for the loop and headed North to the French Cabin Peaks.
Next we hit French Cabin Peak South and then headed west to French Cabin Peak. After topping out on French Cabit Peak, we thought we were just gonna cruise down Kachess Valley back to the car but little did we know that the crux of the trip was ahead of us. The trail along Silver Creek has been rerouted (probably due to extensive avi knock-downs), was buried by snow, and under snow melt. We had a few dicey stream crossings, knock-down crossings, and some route finding challenges, but everybody did great and we viewed this as a character building exercise. After bogging down in the valley for an hour or so we finally got low enough to the point where there was no more snow and we located the trial and cruised back to the car.
By my calcs we went about 16 miles and 4,300 feet. We were on snow for probably about 70% of the trip.
