Ascent Trip ReportI found my way to the Elk Mountain Ski Resort main entrance on hwy 347 and drove on Elk Mountain Road for .25 miles to the second gate, where I turned right and parked at the top parking lot, just below the Resorts Maintenance Service Complex and west of the Middle Chair Lift. This was my TH, all distance in this TR are guess-estimates.
I walked the dirt service road to the summit that leaves the east side of the Maintenance Service Complex and heads west/northwest for .6 miles to a T-Junction (just past a building on the right), where it turns left and climbs/winds generally southeasterly along the ridge .9 mile to the summit (the road stays inside the woods west of the ski runs).
The ELK HILL summit is capped with 8 Communication Towers and a number of buildings and concrete pads and it is evident that with all the construction, nothing here is natural. The top has been flattened, I chose a spot for the present HP at GPS 41.71523,-75.56078. The summit area does offer good views over the Ski Resort to the Northwest.
The plan was to also visit ELK HILL-SOUTH KNOB, so I looked for a route from this summit, its Tower is visible to the south. I followed Lehigh Ski Run south to where it makes a sharp bend left (northeast), a woods track at the right side of this bend headed in my direction so I followed it down to the col and a large E-W swath in the woods (.4 miles from the Elk Hill summit. I continued south .19 miles to where the woods track bends to the southeast. Here I picked-up/climbed-out-of-the-col an old overgrown swath in the woods heading south for the summit, at 130 yards I came upon a grass road that came in from the left and went directly to the summit in another 180 yards. The total distance from Elk Hill being .78 miles. The summit has 2 Communication Towers with buildings, on a large grass open top, no views. I chose my spot in the center of the area GPS 41.70528,-75.56088, the shed to the north at 20 yards contends for the HP, I miss my damaged eye-level.
On the way back I decided to back track over ELK HILL in order to add another "Ascent" to my list.
"YOU ARE THE ROSE OF MY HEART, YOU ARE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE, A FLOWER NOT FADING NOR FALLING APART, IF YOU'RE COLD, LET MY LOVE MAKE YOU WARM, ROSE OF MY HEART." ...... for my Rose ..... Johnny Cash, "Rose of my heart"
