Ascent Trip Report

Grand Som, 2026m, P886m

Map: 1:25k: 3334OT

Stats: 1180mH, 8km

Time: Sun 20 Aug 06, start 07:15, ascent 2:45, descent 1:45.

Start: from SSW, 1mi W of St Pierre-de-Chartreuse, mapped car park behind la Correrie Musee

Route: zigzags to Pas de la Suifre, then unmapped paintmarked path along N ridge to summit

Difficulties: N ridge path steep and scrambly but descendable facing forwards.

Trig point: small bolt/rivet with plain rounded top, just S of cross.

Notes: forest low down, fine rocky summit, big drop to W, fine 3-D Table d’orientation, metal cross. Path muddy and vegetation soaking from overnight rain – wet boots. Patchy cloudy view, Chamechaude partly visible, little else. Mapped path beyond Pas de la Suifre descends slightly before contouring round, hence I missed it, but enjoyed the N ridge path. 3 parties seen. Potentially shorter easier route available from E, Col de Cucheron
