Ascent Trip Report

We climbed both Muddy Pk and Muddy BM on the same hike using the DPS info and access from the north. My DPS TR indicated the road was ok for 2WD to the rock quarry. The roadd has seen some deterioration and it is now 4WD and high clearance from before you get to Buffington Pockets. It took us an hour to drive in to the trailhead after leaving the paved road.

When we arrived at the trailhead, we met a DPS group who Yvonne managed to get to the trailhead in her "Mongo" Van. We hiked with Yvonne, Tina, Mary Joe, Gary, and Ken for a ways and then struck off on our own. Route finding is simple, but we did stay on the main road too long in Hidden Valley. We headed for the obvious saddle on the ridgeline where the wind was blowing pretty good. After a short break we decided to do Muddy Peak first, so we climbed the steep scree slope up to the ridge, followed the ridge to the summit block, and then climbed up about 300ft on Class 3 stuff to the summit. Fun climb with some exposure. When on top, collin and I felt good enough to try for Muddy BM also. We came down the Class 3 stuff, passed the DPS group, and headed back to the saddle.

At the saddle, we took another break at the saddle where the wind was stronger and then headed up to Muddy BM. It is a longer hike to the BM, but it is not technical. It is just another 1,000 ft of elevation gain. No problems coming back down and hiking back across Hidden Valley. Hiking up over the ridge to get back to the trailhead was not fun at the end of a long day. It took us just over 8 hours to do both peaks. On the drive out we passed the DPS group in their Mongo Van.
