Ascent Trip ReportThe Piute Range runs north-south along the east side of Lanfair Valley in the Mohave National Preserve. Hiking to the summit is best done from the west since there is a band of cliffs on the east side. To reach the west side of the range exit Interstate 40 at Goffs Road or at Mountain Springs Road and go north to Goffs. In Goffs reset your odometer and drive north on Lanfair Road. After 10.3 miles the pavement ends and at 16.3 miles there is a junction with Cedar Canyon Road on the left. Continue straight (north) and at 19.5 miles turn right (east) onto a narrow dirt road with a sign for HH Ranch. Note the following features from here: at 2.8 miles the road will turn north and then east again after about a half mile. At 3.7 miles turn left (north) by a sign for K&E Ranch. At 4.2 miles turn right and join a fair road heading NE. At 6.0 miles the road almost disappears as it goes by an earthen dam, but then will recover to pass a water tank at 6.4 miles. At 9.6 miles turn right at a four-way junction and head SE along the west side of the Piute Range. From this last juntion drive about 3.0 miles and park in a flat dry lake which is west of the summit. A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is needed in some rocky stretches along here. UTM where you stop is: 679020E, 3896180N. The highest point of the Range at Ute BM can be seen from here about 1.1 miles due east. Hike up the slopes slightly to the right of the summit. The ascent will take about one hour and has an elevation gain of 1200 feet. 1/00 RLC
