Ascent Trip ReportThumb Peak can be reached from Yuma by driving north on highway 95 for 30.6 miles to the signed Castle Dome turnoff on the right. Turn right here on the paved road which turns to dirt after 1.8 miles. Continue on the very good dirt road to junction 75 after 8.4 miles. Turn right here and drive on this fair dirt road past some mine ruins and then east and north toward the Big Eye Mine. A 4wd vehicle is needed about half way on this route to get past rough sections in the wash. The locked gate near the mine is reached after driving 15.4 miles from junction 75. Thumb Peak is 0.61 miles southwest from here on a bearing of 210 degrees. Park in the wash here and hike west about 200 feet and turn south climbing up the spur of a sandy bench coming down the canyon. Try to stay up on this bench while heading south into the canyon. Farther up stay on the left side above the brushy canyon bottom. After about 1/2 mile turn left up a steep slope past some old mining cairns toward the ridge top. A 30 ft. high spire can be seen up on the ridge and you should head for a gap in the ridge left of this. Cross over the ridge to the east side then head north along the cholla-laden slopes. Go around to the north side where an easy chute leads up to the top. The climb should take about 1 1/2 hours over the one mile route. 3/99 RLC
