Ascent Trip Report3rd HP summit of the day. Quick side note...Blue Ridge Hwy is beautiful at dusk! I drove it from Asheville to Boone though half of it was in complete darkness. Arrived at the first gate entrance off Blue Ridge Hwy and the sign read open from 8a-8p. It was 7:57 and the gate was still opened so I went for it. Eventually I found myself at the next gate which, unfortunately, was closed. So...I parked my car down from the 'No Parking Anytime' sign, hopped the gate, and jogged the 2.5 miles to the top. I did notice there's a park tenant who obviously keeps watch over the place but the shades were drawn and I figured the wind would drown out any noise from my shoes.
The observation area up at the top offers a 360 degree view, and though I haven't seen the view from daylight, I must admit the night skyline was very impressive! With the low lying cloud cover and all the surrounding light pollution from the cities it cast a beautiful orangish hue across the neighboring ranges. Happy I pursued this one at night.
