Ascent Trip ReportThe peak can be reached from highway 62 on the south side of the wilderness area. Turn north off highway 62 at a point 0.2 mi. south of milepost 118 and call box 1822. This turnoff is also about 0.7 mile north of a railroad crossing. Follow this good dirt road which in about 0.2 miles crosses the aqueduct. Then go left (west) along a dirt berm for about 1.8 miles and then turn right and continue generally northwest on the road until you reach a junction at 3.0 miles. Turn left (west) here and go 2.8 miles until you reach a red stake at the wilderness boundary. UTM here is: 706780E, 3780890N. From here the benchmark is on the black, lava-covered ridge at a bearing of 243 degrees. The hike is a moderate 1.8 miles and it takes about 1 1/4 hours to the top. 10/97 RLC
