Ascent Trip Report

Easy hike to near the top of the peak, but the crux is the big rock tower at the summit. Started up a tunnel-like crack in helmets, headlamps, and harnesses. I didn't use the headlamp. Crack climb was unroped and a lot of fun. Crack emerges on a somewhat mildly sloped face covered in lichen. Even with my rock shoes it was difficult to find decent footholds that weren't slipping, and handholds were of the half fingertip, balance-only variety. Face was badly exposed to a 30 meter fall off the tower. Harlan estimated 5.3 on this section, but the lichen makes it seem much tougher, at least in rock shoes. The top of the crack to the right is a better route that can be climbed both up and/or down without rope. I eventually tied into a handline. Most of our party rappelled down, except one (Collin) who went back down the top of the crack. GPS doesn't show the final climbing portion as I left the unit in my bag at the base of the summit tower.
