Start the drive in to Engasser from Stone Cabin on highway 95 which is 52.9 miles north of I-8 in Yuma. It is also just north of milepost 76. Note the following mileages as you drive on this good graded road: at 1.8 miles enter the Kofa Refuge (pick up a map here if you don't have one), at 6.3 miles pass junction 60, at 12.4 miles pass junction 76, at 14.6 miles turn left at junction 79 and at 22.7 miles arrive at junction 65 near Kofa Mine. Reset your odometer here and turn right past the mining settlement on your right and go 1.5 miles to junction 21 and turn left toward Kofa Butte. Follow this road up into Yaqui Wash for about 0.7 miles and park where convenient. UTM here is 225700E, 3685400N (NAD27). Begin the hike heading ESE for about 3/4 mile and then turn east up the canyon on the south side of Kofa Butte. Turn south up a side canyon and climb up to the ridge just east of point 2848 ft. shown on the map. Turn east along the ridge past a 50 ft. conglomerate rock pillar and then head south up the slopes to the summit and the benchmark. The round-trip distance is about 4 miles with an elevation gain of 1100 ft. The ascent takes about 2 1/4 hours and allow 2 hours to return. 1/96 RLC
