Ascent of Diaz Spire on 2000-11-19

Ascent Trip ReportThis peak can be reached by hiking east from the Ajo Mountain Loop Road in the Monument. Starting across from the visitor's center, take the loop road which you must follow clockwise. It is mostly good graded dirt and is suitable for most all cars. The loop has numbered information posts. After 12.7 miles park on your left at a small pullout by info post #18. There is room for a maximum of four vehicles here. UTM here is: 338730E, 3540823N. Start the hike heading southwest and then turn west after about half a mile toward the distant ridgeline. You should head to the left (north) side of a small peak at 2358 feet shown on the map. Then turn southwest to the ridge in the middle of two drainages. UTM on the ridge is: 342500E, 3539220N. Continue climbing the ridge and follow it south up to a saddle at 3420 feet. UTM at the saddle is: 342770E, 3538260N. From the saddle head west staying on the left (south) side of a big rock outcrop on the ridge. Then work your way up the slope to the top. This route is about 7 miles round-trip with a gain of about 1750 feet. Allow about 2 1/2 hours for the ascent and 2 hours to return. This peak can be combined with a climb of Diaz Peak which is the higher summit southwest of the saddle. 11/00 RLC
