Ascent Trip ReportGrowler Peak can be climbed from Charlie Bell Pass on the south side of the peak. To drive out to the pass turn west on Rasmussen Road which is on the north side of Ajo across the street and just north of Woody's Gas station. A high-clearance vehicle is suggested and four-wheel drive is not normally needed. Note the following mileages on the drive out: After 0.4 miles the pavement ends and the road is good graded dirt. At 1.4 miles go right at a junction and at 2.5 miles turn left at another junction to a ranch. After 4.3 miles you will reach a fence and a sign marking the Cabeza Prieta boundary. A permit is needed to drive beyond this point which you can obtain at the Refuge office in Ajo, see the notes above. At 7.5 miles go right at a junction and head across the valley. Continue on the road until it ends at 16.4 miles at Charlie Bell Pass. There is space here for camping for about five vehicles. From the pass hike northwest along the rugged ridgeline to the summit at the north end of a broad plateau. Allow about 1 1/2 hours to reach to top and about the same time to return. The hiking route is 3 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 1550 feet. 11/00 RLC
