Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Woodbury parking area off Route 32. There were already 7 or 8 cars there, so it was easy to find. I then hiked down the road to the railroad trestle, found the trailhead for the Long Path, and promptly lost the trail. It follows the railroad bed, but I wandered through a field and caught back onto the trail shortly. The hike climbs pretty steadily to the foot of High Knob, then it kicks up. Some scrambling gets you to the top of High Knob and some great views. When I got to the top I could see why they call this the 'Highlands' as it has a very Scottish feel. You follow the shoulder of High Knob and then drop down into a small valley. Another short climb with some scrambling gets you on the main Schunnemunk ridge. Make sure you turn right on the Highlands trail, as the Long Path goes straight here. Follow the cairns along the open ridge to the summit. I couldn't find a benchmark but there is a painted elevation mark. Headed east off the summit to see the Magaliths. Huge boulders strewn down the side of Schunnemunk with fantastic views to the Gunks and the Catskills to the North. GPS said it was 7.5 miles and the hike took 3 hours and 20 minutes.
