Ascent Trip ReportThis peak is in the Barry M. Goldwater Range and a permit is required for entry. Information on permits is at my site:
To reach the trailhead for the Tinajas Altas Mountains follow Interstate highway 8 east of Yuma and exit at Wellton which is exit #30 and go south on Ave. 29E for 2.7 miles to 14th St. and turn right (W). Continue on this paved road which will turn to good graded dirt for 4.0 miles to Ave. 25E and then turn left. A sign here indicates the boundary of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range. Reset your odometer and take this road south noting the following signs or features: at 5.2 miles cross under a powerline, at 8.6 miles there is a post marked B3 at a junction, at 15.1 miles there is a B7 post. At 25.2 miles there is a B30 post and a Tinajas Altas sign. UTM here is: 780600E, 3577640N. A hundred feet or so east of the sign turn right (west) on a fair road and follow it for 0.7 miles and turn left. Go south on this road for 1.8 miles to a turnaround at the entrance to a canyon. Hike east into the canyon for about 1/3 mile and turn right into a major canyon. After a short distance the canyon divides so follow the left branch climbing up to a saddle at 1960 feet. The summit can be seen from here behind a dip in the ridge on a bearing of 262 degrees. From here descend and head southwest crossing a rock rib and then up a steep slope to the top. Turn right over a ridge and continue west up and down over small side canyons to the east face of the summit. Go right to the north side and climb boulders to the ridge top on the north side. Scramble south along the ridge to the summit. The route is about 3 miles round-trip with a gain of 1600 feet. Plan on about 2 1/2 hours to reach the top. 11/99 RLC
