Ascent Trip Report

At the junction of highways 38 and 18 on the north side of Big Bear City take route 38 west for 0.6 miles and turn right on Van Dusen Canyon Road (3N09). Take this good dirt road for 4.0 miles until you reach Holcomb Valley Road (3N16) and turn left. After 0.5 mile turn right (north) on road 3N07. On this road note the Wilbur grave on your left at 0.2 mile and at 0.45 mile turn left on 3N43. At 1.2 miles from the Holcomb Valley Road go right at a fork and then at about 1.4 miles detour around a large fallen tree. This detour has a steep dip and high-clearance or 4WD is advised. I recommend parking at 1.5 miles at a turnout on the left where the road starts up a steep, rough section. UTM here is: 508700E, 3797520N. From here start the hike north up the rough section of the road and after 0.2 mile go right into the forest following a drainage system that heads NE. Follow the drainage which will curve east and then SE climbing up the mountain until you reach flatter gound NNW of the summit. Then stay along a ridge keeping several small rocky mounds on your right. The summit is the last point on the ridge as you continue SE. The route is 2.6 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of about 800 ft. The usual hiking time is 1 hour for the ascent and 3/4 hour to return. 6/95 RLC
