Ascent Trip ReportFrom the town of New Cuyama drive west on roue 166 for about 12. 8 miles to Cottonwood Canyon Road on your left. This road is also 0.1 mi. west of milepost 52. Drive this paved road for 4.3 miles and go right at a turn onto Foothill Road. Then at 4.9 miles go straight and cross a cattle guard onto a narrower and rougher road that will shortly curve left heading up into Bates Canyon. At 6.5 miles you will pass the abandoned White Oak Ranger Station and then the Bates Canyon Campground on the left. At 6.9 miles the pavement ends at a seasonal gate and the road gets narrow with some fallen rocks which requires a high-clearance vehicle. The road winds its way up the mountain and reaches a junction in a saddle at 12.5 miles. Turn left (east) here on the Sierra Madre Road, 32S13, and go 4.9 miles to a wide spot with parking area on the left. Park here and hike west up the steep trail to the summit which is only about 0.4 miles with a gain of 360 feet. 5/01 RLC
