Ascent Trip ReportFrom Baker drive north on route 127 to Shoshone. Continue through Shoshone and 1.7 miles north turn left (W) onto route 178 toward Death Valley. From this junction go west and then southwest across the south end of Greenwater Valley and then over Salsberry Pass. At approximately five miles beyond the pass and 15.7 miles from highway 127, turn off right (N) onto a dirt road. Go left at a junction in 0.1 miles and continue on the fair road for 1.0 mile until you reach the cabin at Rhodes Spring. Start hiking NE from here up a wash and around point 756 m to a saddle on the north side of this hill. Crossing the saddle you enter a large wash coming down from the mountain. The summit is now visible from this area. Go north up the wash for about one mile and then the slope becomes steep and loose as you ascend to the ridge NW of point 1157 m shown on the map. UTM on the ridge where you should head is 543100E, 3979800N. From here go up the ridge which has pretty solid black volcanic rock to the upper sloped summit of the peak. Then go NW to the high point and cairn. The hike is 3 1/4 miles one-way with a gain of 2860 ft. and takes about 3 to 3 1/2 hours. The return takes about 2 3/4 hours. 11/95 RLC
