Ascent Trip ReportFrom Albuquerque drive east on Interstate 40 and then in Tijeras Canyon take route 337 south. Continue on route 55 through Tajique to the town of Manzano. On the south edge of town take route 131 toward Manzano State Park. At the park gate turn right on forest road 253 toward Red Canyon Campground. Just before reaching the campground turn south at a junction onto route 422. There is a gate here and this road is closed from November 1st to April 30th. Drive south on this road for about 3.6 miles till you reach a signed junction with road 275 on the left. Continue about another 200 ft. south on 422 and on the right is a sign for the Kayser Mill Trail #080. Though it is signed as a trail it is actually a road which appears legal to drive up for about 0.5 miles to a parking area. Follow the very good trail up to the crest of the range where there is a signed junction with trail #170. Go south on this trail for one mile to the summit. There are very good views from this high point. The route to the top takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours and covers about 3 miles with an elevation gain of about 2000 ft. from route 422. If you drive up the rougher road from 422 you can cut off about 1/2 mile and about 160 ft. of gain. 10/98 RLC
