Ascent Trip ReportSherman Peak is an easy hike on a trail which starts at Sherman Pass. There is also a steep jeep trail to the summit which has radio repeaters. From Kernville drive north along the Kern River for 20 miles and turn right onto Sherman Pass Road, 22S05. Follow this road with its many switchbacks as it climbs up to the Kern Plateau and tops out at Sherman Pass in 15.5 miles. Park here and start the hike across the highway on trail 33E35. The views are great along this maintained trail which reaches the summit after 2 miles. Allow about 1 hour to reach the top. One can drive to the top on jeep road 33E48 which starts a couple miles back down the grade on the west side. This hike is described in more detail in "Exploring the Southern Sierra: East Side" by J.C. Jenkins and Ruby Johnson Jenkins, 3rd ed., 1992. See p. 172. The hike is also in the book "California Hiking" by Tom Stienstra and Michael Hodgson, see p. 567. 9/96 RLC
