Ascent Trip Report

Last free day before New Year's weekend so Rufus (dog) and I headed up to the mountains one last time in 2011. I was still hoping to get to use my new snowshoes. Sill no luck. The trails were very busy and very well packed so today's whole trip was made with microspikes.

We started at the Crawford Depot on Rte 302 and headed up the Avalon Trail. We continued to the right where it met the A-Z trail and followed that up to the Tom Spur Trail. We were to the summit in 1hr 45min. On the way up we were able to help a group who was trying to get to Field but took the wrong turn.

After we bagged the summit at Tom we took the Willey Ridge Trail the entire 0.9 miles to Mt. Field. It's pretty easy going until you get to that last 100 yds. The sign gets you all excited because you're so close but then you turn the corner and see what you have to climb in that last 100 yds. Eh, it's worth it, though. Isn't that why we come up here? We made it over from Tom's summit in 1hr. I ate a PB&J on the summit which I was able to share with a Gray Jay.

From Field's summit we continued the next 1.4 miles on the Willey Ridge Trail to Willey, the third and final stop for the day. It took us 45 min to get from Field to Willey. By that point we were starting to get tired and were ready to make our decent.

Then from Willey we took the Willey Ridge Trail back over to Field. From field we took the Avalon Trail all the way back to Crawford Depot. From Willey to the Depot was a total of 4.2 miles which took us 2 hrs. Going down is way easier than going up :-)

At the trail head we got to help somebody jump start their car. Always nice to lend a helping hand. By the time we got to the truck the skies were getting very dark and it was time to go home. All in all, an excellent day in the mountains!
