Ascent Trip ReportI approached Tom Spring Mountain from the north and Dead Indian Memorial Hwy. About 9.5 miles north of Ashland turn south on signed gravel Cove Rd. This is a good road. Follow it 2.5 miles (passing a nice ranch at about 1.9 miles) to a yellow gate where you will have to park at elevation 3,400 ft.
Hike up the road past the gate. At about .33 mile take the right fork up the hill. Actually both forks go to the same place, but the right fork is a nicer road. Hike up the road, go around another yellow gate, and stay on the main good road. In a couple miles another road comes up from the right and merges with the one you are hiking. Go left on this merged road, ignore the first road to the right, and then take the second old abandoned logging road to the right. This road goes up to Tom Spring. Tom Spring is a real spring that is fenced and has a little pond for water storage. Just past the spring, the road ends at at fence. Turn left and climb the forested hill to the summit, crossing a barb wire fence along the way. Good views in places looking south to Mt Shasta, north to Mt McLoughlin, and west down into the Rogue Valley.
