Ascent Trip ReportA short trail hike northbound ....... 1 mile, 30 minutes RT.
At first it was my intention not to enter a TR since the easy/straight-forward trail hike has enough TRs .... no need to take-up unnecessary space. The present road conditions to the TH however necessitated an updated.
I used Gary Fallesen's easy/short Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) approach from the south, the TH is on Valentine Hill Road at the Power Line Right-Of-Way. I walked the FLT (white blazed) northbound on the good four-wheel-drive road as it follows the Power Line Right-Of-Way, approx 600 yards to the height-of-land, 70 yards past the FLT turns left (west) into the woods and climbs less than 100 yards to the summit and beyond, no views. The Witness Post and the BM are to the left "US Coast & Survey Marker, Virgil 1934", my GPS read 42.49286, -76.14007. I met/chatted with 2 Hunters, the descent took 10 minutes.
Driving Directions to the TH. Our driving experience was that of Bob Packard's. We first tried to get to the TH from the north via South Hill Road and Van Donsell Road and found both not to be passable with a passenger car (South Hill Road actually dead-ends). We found our way to the southeast side of the mountain, corner of Valentine Hill Road and Parker Street at Lapeer Church and drove north on the Valentine Hill Road approx 2.5 miles to the FLT noted above. The Valentine Hill Road is paved except for the last mile, with the last .37 miles being a rough High Clearance Vehicle Road. We gingerly drove this rough section taking a big risk. I am therefore recommending to park/make your TH at the start of this rough section ( a dirt track leaves to the right), unless of course you have a High Clearance Vehicle then you can drive to within 100 yards of the summit as per Bob Packard. The one way easy hike to the summit is no big deal, perhaps .85 miles, 20 minutes.
