Ascent Trip ReportFrom US-67, in the "town" of Cherokee Pass, which is about 5 miles S of Fredricktown, I turned W on MO Rd C. A fireworks outlet lies on the SE quadrant of the intersection. Call this point mile 0.0. At 2.1 miles is a gravel road on the R, which appears from the topo map to be the preferred way to the summit (whether by driving or walking). Though not gated, the road was posted prominently enough to discourage me from driving it. Scattered houses on the main highway didn't afford me much of a place to park on the highway and hike the road to the summit. Fortunately there is another way that's 100% legal because it's in the Mark Twain NF. I continued W on MO-C until mile 3.2, where FR-2127 (identified only by an obscure FS fiberglass wand) goes off to the R at a sharp L turn in the highway. FR-2127 is narrow and gravel, but should be negotiable by most passenger cars. At 4.0 miles the road crosses a creek and begins climbing. At 4.1 miles the road is briefly steep and rutted, and a vehicle without high clearance would probably not be able to make it up this section. At 4.4 miles is an abandoned road on the R, which is the hiking route. I continued around a L turn so that I could park at a wide spot shortly thereafter.
I hiked E along the abandoned road, which stayed on the crest of a ridge in an immature forest. The topo map shows that the road ends after about ¼ mile, but in fact the road continues farther E and makes a gradually ascending traverse across the S face of Matthews Mtn. After a few more minutes, the road stops gaining elevation, and I left the road and hiked directly uphill through open forest to the summit towers.
