Ascent Trip Report

Drove to the Ides Cove trailhead for S. Yolla Bolly Mtn. To get there, I got off Highway 5 in Corning and drove to small town of Paskenta. At the Paskenta gas station, take the right fork west out of town called Toomes Camp Rd. Later, the road is labeled simply M2. Drive 17.5 miles to the end of the pavement and then follow signs 6.1 miles to Cold Springs. Now take M22 to the right at a junction and head for Ides Cove. In 9 miles, turn left off M22 onto Rd 25N19 and go 1.5 miles to the Ides Cove sign. Up to this point, the dirt roads are in excellent to good condition. Take the first right after the sign to the Backpackers Trailhead. The dirt road for this last 0.5 mile of driving to the Backpackers Trailhead is in fair condition. People with experience driving passenger cars on rough dirt roads should have little problem getting to this trailhead.

I first hiked on the trail for less than 100 feet to where it splits, and then just hiked straight up the ridge from the trail split. Starts out through trees then opens up with excellent views of the Central Valley, Coast Range and Mt. Shasta. The hike to the summit took only 45 min, had a gain of about 1200 feet and was about 2.7 miles round trip. All class 1 with occasional sections of use trail where the ridge tends to narrow and get rocky. Nice places to camp at or near the trailhead.
