Ascent Trip ReportThe third peak on a tour of State highpoints in central Germany. Arriving from the north via Erfurt, I turned off the 71 motorway at the exit to the long Rennsteig tunnel (junction Oberhof). Head back north on the L3247, then turn off right at the interesting Rennsteiggarten (http://www.rennsteiggartenoberhof.de/ also in English). From there the road climbs up the hill to a point with an obvious dirt parking on the right hand (W) side. A signpost on the opposite side of the road indicates the Grosser Beerberg but this is unnecessary since there is only one good track leading uphill (due S). After a short distance this track merges with the Rennsteig itself, a long distance route through the Thueringer Wald. Continue along the track until a viewing tower is reached. Here a sign in German asks you not to climb up to the hilltop to protect the local flora and fauna, although it doesn't seem to be prohibited, and an easy to follow path indicates many people ignore the request. THe summit trig point is not too hard to find, although there may be some higher ground to the east where a lack of trees also affords a certain amount of view. I returned by the same route and continued on to the fouth and final highpoint of the day, Wasserkuppe.
