Ascent Trip ReportA pleasant diversion during a long motorway drive through Germany.
Leaving the E31 motorway on the road 412 in the direction of Hohenleimbach, it takes about 25 minutes to drive past the village to a turn off (right) signposted Hohe Acht, where the Berghaus Hohe Acht also provides an obvious landmark and a possible ascent route. I chose to continue from the turn off about 2km round to the north side of the mountain to some dirt surfaced parking with a couple of information signboards.
From there the route led south up the tarmac road to a junction. Turning left on the hairpin led in a curve to a small picnic spot under the summit (route continues to berhaus hohe acht). Turning left up a steeper path with some steps leads to the foot of the observation tower (Kaiser-Wilhelm Turm), which can be ascended at any time for a splendid view across the forested Eifel hills. Indicator boards allow easy identification of neighbouring peaks). At the time of my visit the autumn foliage was spectacular and this must be the best season to be there.
The tower is not actually built on the summit and one needs to go behind the tower and up a rocky step to find the actual summit with it's pillar, but form here the view is partially blocked by vegetation.
