Ascent Trip Report

Big Tip was a drive up for me, but that doesn't mean it was easy. Big Tip is in a logging area that is often closed to public driving access which means it would be a long hike. I tried to drive up fromthe roads near Valsetz but the gate was locked and there was some logging occurring between Valsetz and Big Tip. Then the sun went down and it started raining, so I car camped along a road on the south side of Big Tip. The next morning I started looking for a way up. I found 3 different roads on the south side that looked like they went up Big Tip a ways, all 3 had hunter vehicles parked near the gates, but one of the gates was open. There was a yellow sign that said something about restricted vehicle access during bow and elk season that I ignored since I was not hunting. I followed this good road up the south side of Big Tip and it reached a saddle on the east side of the peak. From there another lesser more dirt road circled around the north and west side of the peak before going right up to the summit. I walked around looking for higher ground, but I think I parked at the highest spot unless you count the big 4 ft boulder that had been stacked on top of an old stump. Great views and also my 35th CoPP in OR.
