Ascent Trip Report

This was intended to be an ascent of Tidirhine, to complete our set of the five Moroccan ultras. However when we got to where I expected the summit to be, the GPS was reading low to the tune of about 140m and we could see what appeared to be a higher summit about 4 km further west (2300m co on Google Maps). Something clearly wrong. To quote "The Ascent of Rum Doodle" - We had climbed the wrong mountain!

It has subsequently been confirmed that the Ultra is actually 4 km NORTH of where we were! A map I've subsequently seen (see photos) shows a 2456m and a 2448m summit at this location (the westernmost has a trig symbol), and a 2333m/P400 summit (Jbel Ijmou'a Salaim) at the location we visited. The summit wasn't part of our original plan and the ascent was made the day after our Adrar Bou Nasser ascent, on the basis of rudimentary research using a slow internet connection a couple of nights before the climb.

It wasn't feasible to hike between the peaks or to research and make a new ascent from a different trailhead in the time we had available.

We started our hike high on the mountain road to Targuist which leaves the N8 Fes road north of Tanaoute. We started at N34.77384 W4.47710, 1385m which involved a fair bit of bush whacking and further along on the crest of the ridge we came across a path which continued to our summit. After summitting, we followed the path down. It starts at N34.77640 W4.46932, 1384m (verge parking). The path is a little indistinct in places but generally follows the ridge line. There are a few false summits to cross.

In contrast with the higher almost barren higher summits of the Middle and High Atlas we had visited earlier in the week, this summit has a very Mediterranean feel, with aromatic Cistus bushes lining the route.

The summit we visited has two tops more or less equal in elevation, GPS readings: South (2318m, N34.80188 W4.49553) and North (2319m, N34.80275 W4.49505). Both are bouldery outcrops (no sign of a trig pillar / bolt).
