Ascent Trip Report

I finally got around to visiting this rather notable nearby mountain. I hiked up following the Old Halfway House and White Arrow Trails. For my descent, I followed a more circuitous and lesser-traveled route. I followed the Smith Summit Trail down to the summit of Monte Rosa, tacking on an out-and-back along the Ampitheater Trail. After descending from Monte Rosa, I took the Fairy Spring Trail down to the Halfway House Trail and back to the trailhead.

I reached the summit probably before it was really crowded, but I was still sharing the spot with a couple of dozen others. The weather was near ideal, and the summit views were outstanding.

While hiking my out-and-back along the Ampitheater Trail, I passed by Black Precipice and surprised some rock climbers who were organizing their gear and engaged in a technical discussion in preparation for their climb.

The Fairy Spring Trail was pleasant and provided solitude on this extremely busy day during the Columbus Day holiday weekend; I had the whole trail to myself. Fairy Spring itself is a nice, peaceful spot worth checking out. While on the Fairy Spring Trail, I also passed by the remnants of the Joseph Fassett House, which stood in the mid nineteenth century.
