Ascent Trip Report

After paying the 4 Euro fee to drive up to the Wochenbrunneralm, I parked under a cloudless sky. Unfortunately there were patches of cloud hugging the mountain, which would not dissapte all day and severely curtailed the views.

There are 3 possible routes from the parking to the Gruttenhütte. The easiest (path 825) which I used in descent goes up through some pretty forest in zigzags but is very rough and rubbly underfoot, not really to be recommended. The second (path 824), which I used in ascent, and the third both start by ascending up the forest road to the Baudeamushütte. From here, take the lower of two paths heading west across the corrie. There are a couple of forks but the signposting is generally good. The path I took was signposted Gruttenhütte via Klamml and ascended a good path up a steep side valley, higher up there were a couple of ladders and some short rocky steps to climb. Overall very enjoyable and nice underfoot. The third variant (which can be seen from the second) climbs higher up the corrie and cuts back at a higher level, with a short section of via ferrata. I can´t comment about that one but it looks not much longer.

From the hut the normal route up the Gamsängersteig is well described in numerous guidebooks and websites. On my ascent I noted some significant danger of rockfall, particularly just above the Jägerwandtreppe (a bizarre ladder of staples set into a rock wall at a point where it seems almost easier to stay on the ground). Take a helmet and wear it! Via ferrata kit is probably advised but there are no really difficult sections if you are a confident scrambler with a good head for exposure. Enjoy!
