Ascent of Huffaker Mountain on 2011-09-25
|Date:||Sunday, September 25, 2011|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||3640 ft / 1109 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI approached Huffaker Mtn from the town of Randal on Hwy 12. Turn south from Hwy 12 at the Chevron Station and market in Randal and zero your odometer. Cross the river, at at 1.0 mile go right on FR 25. At 2.5 turn right on FR 2502 that is gravel and soon dirt. Stay on the main track of this road and at 5.0 miles reach a T intersection and turn right on FR 2505. At 7.3 miles go straight, and at 8.0 miles stop at a switchback to the left and a rusty old gate straight ahead. Park in front of the gate.
I hiked up the abandoned road behind the gate in the rain. There is kind of a climbers trail in the grass on the roadbed and I followed this until it reached a nicer gravel road coming up from the south. My road had some boulders across it to block access from the nicer road. I followed the nicer road eastward across the face of Huffaker Mtn and then it turned back west towards the high point. It went over the sub peak where the benchmark is located and continued all the way to the unremarkable high point. No views. On the way back out I left the road and found the benchmark and a witness marker in the forest on the sub peak.
