Ascent Trip Report

Approaching the area was better than I expected with the road paved to Ophir then very good (with one exception where the road crossed a stream) to a large parking area at 6880'. Beyond that a 4WD or at least high-clearance vehicle would have been needed.

The road up to Halls Basin has a sign at the bottom that Access Ends in 1.6 miles, but there is a gate with "no trespassing" posted in less than half that (at about 8000'). Hoping it was for ATVs and not hikers, we bypassed that gate and continued up to just past 8800' where we saw another "no trespassing" sign and decided to abandon the road and make for the clearing on the ridge. Even if access were permitted, this would have been the best choice, as the hillside only got worse the further north one went. It took a little bushwhacking, but once we reached the south side of the tree-line, the ridge was good going all the way to the main ridge at 10,400'.

Once at the ridge, we were able to find a faint use trail that led to the summit. The views from the summit were the best I've ever seen in Utah.

We followed the use trail on the way back to just below Lewiston Peak. The trail appeared to continue heading south, so we followed it. This was a MISTAKE. One should head west down the ridge. We descended some before making our way back to the ridgeline where we were able to find a trail that took us to the clearing at 9600'. Unable to find a good trail from there, we chose to try to follow the old "trail" marked on the topo. This was another BIG MISTAKE. In most places the "trail" is wiped out beyond a trace. Again, I'd suggest following the ridge. Finally, just above the clearing at 9150' we found the trail again, and this time were able to follow it down to the dirt road at 8200'.
