Ascent Trip ReportSeptember 17, 2011
Giant Mt and Rocky Peak
We arrived at the Zander Scott Trailhead a little after 10:00. The area was pretty full, but found a couple of spaces without too much trouble. Today Lil-Yeti, Red Goat, Eti and a colleague are headed out for our first peak in the Adirondacks. We started our hike at 10:20am.
The Zander Scott trail was described as a bit steeper than the Roaring Brook trail but it also had more views and so we decided to go the steeper route. We were not disappointed! There was a bit of a traffic jam crossing the Giant Washbowl. There was a nice log bridge for most of the way, but the water seemed to be a bit high and the last bit was very tricky to get to dry land without getting wet feet. Slowly we did make the other side. Although the parking lot was pretty full and at the water crossing several groups came together it wasn’t long before we spread out again and made for the summit at our own pace.
Lil-Yeti, Rich and I made the summit of Giant at 1:15. There were several others enjoying the blue skies and the wonderful views.
After having some lunch and soaking in the view, Lil-Yeti and I headed off to Rocky Peak at 1:45. Wow, the Ridge trail leaving Giant sure is steep, and for the most part wet and very ‘rooty’. Not quite as comfortable to travel as the Zander Scott trail we used this morning. It felt good to finally reach the col and start climbing toward Rocky Peak. (We decided even having to climb is easier than going down that portion of the trail.) We reached the summit of Rocky Peak at 2:45. No crowds on this peak, just 3 other hikers. We completely enjoyed the views back toward ‘home’ over the Champlain Valley. We spotted Camels Hump and Mt. Mansfield which is normally in our backyard. After taking many pictures and again just enjoying the clear views, we made our way back to where we came from at 3:10.
Although the cardio was much more difficult, climbing back up Giant seemed to be ‘easier’ than going down. Lil-Yeti and I seemed to have the whole mountain to ourselves as we didn’t run into anyone until we met up with Red Goat and Eti who were coming back up the mountain to great us.
We arrived back at the car at just after 6pm.
