Ascent Trip ReportRock Candy Mountain was the final stop on my circular, soggy, rainy, foggy, cloudy Grand Tour of the Capitol State Forest.
Once departing Larch Mountain, I wound my way around the south, west, and finally north sides of Rock Candy. The roads deteriorated to some degree as I continued along, but I had no issues. Finding a nice, large pullout at the beginning of the summit road, I stopped and walked the rest of the way. During my trek I thought several times that, while rocky, the road was completely passable and anyone could put a minivan on the top without a problem, though I enjoyed walking in the light rain - it had been a long time since I had experienced "Washington conditions."
While I was standing on the very summit, I heard a vehicle approaching. It was a young couple in a Toyota truck - with air hissing out of the right rear tire. Perhaps, in the end, it was a smart decision to walk the road. I asked several times if they needed any help, but the guy seemed to have things under control and they said they'd be fine. I walked back down slowly and examined maps of possible roads out of the forest, hoping they'd drive back down soon. 10 minutes after my arrival at the truck they cruised on by.
With the ceiling at about 1000', if views are to be had, I'm the wrong person to ask.
A Discover Pass is required for travel within the Capitol State Forest.
