Ascent Trip Report

The trail to Icehouse Saddle is fairly steep in places, taking you up to 7555', especially towards the end of this section, as you come up out of Icehouse Canyon. An alternate route would be taking the Chapman Trail, which splits from the main trail about one mile in, but this adds some mileage, 1.7 miles each way.

From Icehouse Saddle you have a fairly steep downhill then uphill roller-coaster section that ends when you reach the Bighorn / Cucamonga Saddle, at 7654'. Various sources put the extra elevation gain through this section at approximately 200'.

From there you head up the north side of Cucamonga Peak, and eventually you will get to a small turnoff that takes you the final .2 miles to the summit (continuing straight takes you on to Etiwanda Peak).

Once on the summit you have some spectacular views of Southern California, as well as many surrounding peaks. Unfortunately, we could not locate the summit register, so we made sure we took lots of pictures, including each of us with the summit marker.

On the way back down, the roller-coaster section between the two saddles can give you a little bit of trouble if you're tired/hot, and the almost-final stretch back towards the Icehouse Canyon TH is on (well maintained) rock, which can start to pound away at you.

eats/drinks: 5 liters of water (it was really hot in the afternoon), carried three and re-filled two at Columbine Spring, two packs of Gu Chomps, four bags of Jelly Belly Sport Beans, and two Power Bar fruit smoothie bars.

Very nice hike, but the late summer heat made it pretty rough at the end, hence the degree of difficulty.
