Ascent Trip Report

On CT-341, just W of where it crosses the Housatonic on the W side of Kent, I turned N on Skiff Mtn Rd. Zero your odometer here. For the first 1.2 miles, Skiff Mtn Rd runs along the W bank of the Housatonic, then it turns away from the river and begins climbing. At 2.7 miles I stayed straight where Fuller Mtn Rd goes L. At 4.1 miles I turned R where both intersecting roads are signed as Skiff Mtn. Shortly thereafter the road proceeds through the Marvelwood School, a boarding school. At 5.6 miles, the road makes a sharp R, just after which a fence-like sign, parallel to the road on the L side, says that the road changes from Skiff Mtn Rd to Modley Rd. At 5.7 miles the pavement ends. At 6.3 miles is a muddy clearing on the L, where I parked.

I hiked into the woods on the far side of the clearing, reaching an overgrown stone wall topped by a crumbling barbed wire fence. I carefully negotiated this and emerged into a large field with a trailer on the L and some junk vehicles on the R. I proceeded directly across the field and followed a grass road from the far side, eventually reaching a smaller field with some abandoned structures. Beyond this field is open native forest, through which I gradually climbed a few hundred yards to the highest ground.
