Ascent Trip Report

Bagged in a spare hour on a business trip to the south of France. From Aix-en-Provence drive along the D10 which is well signposted to Vauvernages from the inner ring road. After Vauvernages the road forks. Take the right fork (still the D10) to it's high point at the Col des Portes. There is parking for 5 or 6 cars and more in a proper car park just over the pass.

The rocky path is signposted Pic de Mouches and climbs steadily through scrubby brush and low trees to the ridgeline just East of the summit. The path is easy to follow in it's entirety and the view would be spectacular at a time of year without the dust haze so prevalent in Provence. Nevertheless the south face of the neighbouring peak to the west (didn't get the name) is a vertical limestone wall which undoubtedly has some good climbing routes on it.

An ascent from the south is also possible along the GR9 but would be longer (and hotter!).
