Ascent Trip Report

Only had a limited time on a short weekend trip, so did this on alpine style. Got up at 3:15, drove to the Adirondack Loj parking lot from the B&B at Schroon Lake. Geared up and was on the trail at 4:52. Steady going under headlight and a full moon. Was passed by two trail runners after about 45 minutes and spent the rest of the hike trying to catch up. Trail was remarkably rocky after the first 2 miles, especially full of rounded pond cobble along the Phelps Brook. Very wet even in August. The trail to the summit had a few short stretches of 3rd class friction scrambling, but nothing serious. View from top was excellent. Had it to myself after the trail runners headed off for the rest of their 20+ mile loop (impressive pair, I assure you). Heading down the blocky, rocky cobble prevented me from really making up some time. Then I experienced the trail of people heading up...had to be over 200. Glad I started early...still, it probably kept me from finishing the whole climb under 6 hours. As it was, register to register it was 6:20. I was able to meet my wife for lunch back at Schroon Lake at 12:30.
