Ascent Trip Report

From I-15 exit 47, which is that many miles N of the UT border, I headed E for 12 miles on US-30 to Lava Hot Springs. I turned S into town through the water park; call the turnoff point mile 0.0. At 0.2 miles I turned R on Main St. At 0.5 miles I turned L on S 4th W. At 1.9 miles I turned L just before the cemetery, and just after a fenced pipeline station with a corrugated metal shack. The road is narrow and rough, and a vehicle without high clearance may have trouble. At 2.0 miles is a green gate with a padlock that was not in use. I opened and closed the gate to proceed through it. The road climbs and winds, ultimately reaching a convoluted ridge crest. There is much evidence of a pipeline nearby. At some point it becomes Thunder Mtn Rd. After a few miles, a few scattered houses begin to appear. At 5.0 miles is an oblique intersection; I went straight ahead, as both side roads are private drives. At 5.4 miles I turned L on Wyoming Trail; if you miss the turn, you head into Thunder Mtn Ranch. Wyoming trail is initially wide, smooth, and well-graded, but this relief is short-lived, and at mile 5.7 it crosses a cattle guard and reverts back to the narrow, uneven condition of the previous few miles. At 6.1 miles (7000 feet elevation) I reached a grassy pullout on the L, where I decided to park. I probably could have continued a ways, but the benefit/risk ratio was not very good and I decided it was not worth taking any more chances.

My GPS showed that I was 5.14 air-miles from the summit. It was a straightforward hike to the summit, taking about 4 hours RT. In addition to the net elevation gain, the only ups and downs were a 80' dip to Windy Pass and a 300' dip just north of Baldy Mtn. Highest ground is a rock pile just beyond the farthest antenna on the summit.
